Mr. Habilis

LEE & BAE is pleased to present Mr. Habilis, a solo exhibition by artist Sungjae Lee, at LEE & BAE L2 in Marine City, Haeundae. Working primarily with thread and textile, Lee extends the language of drawing into spatial forms, moving fluidly between installation, sculpture, and two-dimensional works. Bringing together immersive installations, large-scale paintings, and drawings, the exhibition explores themes of family, care, memory, and labor through a visual vocabulary shaped by repetition, accumulation, and the gestures of the hand. Borrowing its title from Homo habilis—the earliest human species associated with toolmaking—Mr. Habilis reflects the artist’s sustained engagement with manual processes such as stitching, knotting, and weaving. Through these repetitive acts, ordinary materials are transformed into intricate structures that embody personal narratives and collective experiences. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the overlooked relationships, emotions, and histories embedded within everyday life, revealing how acts of making can become a means of remembering, connecting, and caring.
